Political Party Conventions Have Several Purposes

Since our schools don’t teach this stuff, this is what the conventions are all about.

This week and next, Americans will conduct the most intense stage in the presidential election process. The 2012 Republican National Convention is in progress in Tampa, FL until Thursday, August 30 and the Democrats will convene in Charlotte, NC from September 4 through 6. The conventions’ primary purpose is to nominate the parties’ presidential and vice presidential candidates for the November election. However, there are other goals as well.

Please be sure that you are registered and that you vote. Voter registration is painless. Forms are available in many locations –government offices, public libraries, schools, and others. You can even register online. Election Day is November 6.

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR STATE’S VOTER ID RULES.

THE REPUBLICANS DON’T WANT YOU TO VOTE.

Why Does Congress Take a Five Week "Vacation"?

Congressional approval ratings have matched the all-time low of just 12 percent, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. That means that fewer than 1 of every 8 Americans thinks Congress is doing a good job. Much of this dissatisfaction is surely deserved, but far too many people have the wrong idea about what members of Congress are supposed to do for a living.

Congress recessed on August 2 and will return to work on September 10, leading millions of Americans to gripe, yet again, about the easy life of our Congressional representatives. Sorry folks, this one isn’t true either.

Members of Congress work more hours in every week than most Americans ever thought of working. Whether you like them or not, whether you agree with their principles or not, they do show up for work. Yet politically ignorant Americans think that the members aren’t working if they’re not on the House and Senate floors every minute. That is not the way Congress works.

The Chick-fil-A Squabble is Not a First Amendment Issue

THIS is why our schools need to teach this stuff.

Here we go again, folks. Every once in a while, a public figure states an opinion about a political issue. Then some people object. Then other people object to the first bunch. Then millions of Americans whip themselves into a colossal panic, whining about their “First Amendment Rights”. And they’re wrong.

Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy said in July that he opposes same sex marriage and supports organizations that share his views. Boston and Chicago Mayors Thomas Menino and Rahm Emmanuel said that they don’t want his stores in their cities.

Then a bunch of people with nothing better to do bought chicken sandwiches that they didn’t really want, and others who did want sandwiches stopped buying them. And each group thought that the others were violating their “rights”. Sorry, folks. It doesn’t work that way.
